In the Old Testament the priest was a go between, between the people and God. Only the priest had direct access to God – only the high priest could go behind the veil in the temple. The priest prayed for the people and made the sacrifices for the people. He prayed for their sins.
Matthew 27:50-54 NKJV
“And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
In the new testament, Jesus became the go between, between man and God. At His death the veil in the temple was torn into, giving everyone access to God. At Calvary you became a priest unto God.
1 Peter 2:9-10 NKJV
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.”
As a priest you are to proclaim the praises of God. As a priest you are to ask God to forgive your sins yourself – you do not need someone else to ask God to forgive you. As a priest you are entitled to receive communion (by yourself or with others) any where you desire. As a priest you are to intercede for others. As a priest you can enter into the holy of holies. And the list goes on and on. Are you exercising your priestly rights and responsibilities?
Thank-you for providing a way for us to be restored to fellowship with You. Through Jesus we now have direct access to You. We a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, Your own special people. By the power of the Holy Spirit, help us to proclaim Your praises. You have called us out of darkness into Your marvelous light. Thank-you for the mercy You have shown us. Reveal to us by the Holy Spirit the rights and responsibilities of being a priest unto You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen
