When we say the word “sorcery” people usually think about magic or witchcraft. Sorcery is a type of false worship. Some dictionaries definition it as magic performed with the aid of evil spirits; witchcraft. Other dictionaries define sorcery as trying to use the power of Satan and his demons to affect people’s lives. However, there is still another definition of sorcery that many in today’s world (even in the church) try to avoid or overlook. And that is drug use.
Magical arts often found in connection with idolatry and fostered by it are one form of sorcery. It is using charms (statues, trinkets, …) to try to cause something to happen or to try to foretell future events (fortune telling, crystal balls, certain games, horoscopes, …).
II. Trying to use the power of Satan (witchcraft)
Witchcraft is using an evil spirit or occult force to make (cause) something to happen.
III. Drug Use (drug addictions)
The word sorcery comes from the Greek word pharmakeia, which means the use of (or administering) drugs or poison. The words pariseeism, pharma, pharmaceutic, pharmaceutical, pharmaceutics, pharmacist, pharmacolical, pharmacologist, pharmacology, and pharmacy are all derived from the word the Greek word pharmakeia.
There is a big difference in taking legal medications under the supervision of a physician for legitimate illness (to correct an abnormality) and being addicted to drugs. Society likes to sugar coat sin by renaming it. Today alcoholism is called a sickness or disease, drug use is called a dependency and cigarette smoking is called a habit.
1.Alcohol – the colorless, flammable, volatile liquid in wine, beer, whiskey, gin, and other fermented and distilled liquids that make them intoxicating. Alcohol is poisonous.
Intoxicating: capable of making somebody drunk or stupefied, or capable of making somebody intensely excited or overjoyed, often so much so that the person becomes irrational.
2.Narcotics- anything that numbs, soothes, or dulls. Narcotics can cause poisoning.
3.Nicotine- a poisonous alkaloid contained in the leaves, roots, and seeds of tobacco.
A drug addict is a slave to a habit (or drug). They habitually and/or excessive use a substance to affect or overcome the body (or senses) in a way that is not natural. They use the drugs to change how they feel, act or think. In essence, drugs become an idol to them. Instead of turning to God to change them by the power of His Holy Spirit, they turn to a substance. They engage in a type of sorcery.
Galatians 5:19-21 NKJV “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
Sorcery is a work of the flesh. Works of the flesh are positive proof that a person is not living under the influence and the power of the Holy Spirit, but is living under the influence, control and direction of Satan and is being energized (powered) by him. They are living bondage – they are not living in the freedom that Jesus Christ has given us.
Sorcerers (people who practice sorcery) will be judged. In the Old Testament times, the consequences of sorcery was severe – it had deadly consequences.
Exodus 22:18 NKJV “You shall not permit a sorceress to live.”
In the final judgment unbelievers, those who are not in Christ (those who have not accepted the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ) will be judged.
Revelation 21:6-8 NKJV “And He said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.’ ”
Revelation 22:14-15 NKJV “Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.”
Jesus came not only to save our souls (redemption) but to deliver us from the bondage (slavery) of sin. That includes deliverance from the bondage of sorcery, no matter what form or type.
Luke 4:18-19 NKJV “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted;
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord”
Thank You for Your Son, Jesus Christ. I thank You that Jesus came not only to save our souls, and bring us redemption, but He came to deliver us from the bondage and slavery of sin.
